In crisis right now?

Call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), available 24/7 for any mental health emergency, not only suicidal thoughts. Text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line) if you can't speak. Call 911 if you are in immediate physical danger. You do not need to have a plan or be at the "worst point" to reach out. If you're struggling and not sure what to do next, these lines are for that.

TL;DR
  • 988 is the national mental health crisis line. Call or text, free, 24/7. You don't have to be suicidal to use it. Distress and confusion count.
  • If you're not in crisis but need support, community mental health centers offer sliding-scale or free care regardless of insurance status. Your county likely has one.
  • Finding a therapist is easier with a tool like the SAMHSA Treatment Locator (findtreatment.gov) or your insurance's provider directory. Both let you filter by location, specialty, and cost.
  • Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, most insurance plans must cover mental health the same way they cover physical health. You can appeal coverage denials.
  • If you're uninsured, options exist: Medicaid, Federally Qualified Health Centers, university training clinics, and sliding-scale practices are all paths in.

If You're in Crisis

A mental health crisis is any moment when distress is severe enough that you can't manage it on your own: suicidal thoughts, a panic attack that won't stop, psychosis, or being so overwhelmed you don't know what to do next. All of the following are built for these moments.

A note on 988

Many people avoid calling 988 because they feel their situation isn't "bad enough." There is no threshold. The line is for anyone who is struggling and uncertain what to do. Counselors will not dispatch police to your location unless you are in imminent danger and consent to it or are unresponsive.
